Speaker Johnson seeks to unify his party and pass legislation that is viable in the Senate.
Members of the majority in the House of Representatives held a closed-door meeting this week to discuss what measures they plan to propose to keep the government funded.
The annual budget for the federal government was originally due on October 1 but Congress passed a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown. The short-term funding lasts through November 17, new House Speaker Mike Johnson is seeking to pass legislation that will garner enough support to pass the Senate.
“Everybody’s got a little bit different position, different opinions,” Representative Brian Babin of Texas. “Right now, we’re cogitating about it.”
“We certainly want to avoid a government shutdown. It’s a dangerous time around the world right now. We recognize that,” Speaker Johnson said at a news conference. “We’ll be revealing what our plan is in short order.”
